A wise woman sits above a crowded dock, robes fluttering in the wind. She looks toward her waiting boat to take her to the Southern Continent, a dangerous land filled not with disease but with people. She turns to face the crowd before her, clearing her throat as a silky voice emits from under her shawl.
“Now, I know that those older have heard this story many a time but this is for the little ones. Now if the grumblings could die down? Yes, good. The plague changed everything. The banishment to a frozen, dry barren place such as this was bad enough, but the plague compounded our miseries. To escape such a fate we fled across the water to the islands. These islanders embraced us into their culture, their people. Without them we would have been dashed upon the rocks.”
She pauses to lower the fabric around her mouth, her voice becoming stronger as piercing eyes gaze into each and every person gathered to hear her speak.
“We slowly but surely became one to the hooded people we are now. These scarves that we wear were perfect to help stem the tide of disease. The great Houses we have today stemmed from that exodus, most of all the Sakura family. We have persevered through the thinnest ice and the vastest deserts to this. Our home, built through trade and commerce and ready to share with those outside. I must leave you now children, for I have many wares to service in the South. May this feast bring us many filled coffers.”
With her piece said, the woman drops down from the crate she sat on and hurries to her ship. The South awaited.
Physical features
Tanned skin from living on the islands for many years combined with intermarrying of two different cultures has made the people of Syyana-Sakura unique. Standing at a modest height between five and six feet Syyana-Sakura merchants are always able to be spotted by the colorful, flowing robes and scarves they wear to stave off the constant threat of disease striking the North.
